      Warlpiri Tribe from Yuendumu

Runa Williams Napangardi, born in 1957 in Yuendumu of the Warlpiri tribe. Currently resides in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, she commenced painting in 1995.

Her paintings mainly depict the bush banana plants with their radiating vines. The world renowned artist Eunice Napangardi, who is famous for her works depicting the Bush Banana Dreaming, is Runa's sister.

The Central Desert Australian Aboriginal people consider the Bush Banana plants to be of great importance because of their nutritional value and healing properities. They are eaten as a fruit and also used for medicinal purposes. Bush Banana plants grow in rock crevices close to water holes, or dry riverbeds in spinifex country.

Runa's interest in preserving her ancestral culture is portrayed through her unique and colourful artwork.

More Runa Napangardi Williams paintings are available from our Fine Art Gallery.
