Warlpiri Tribe
Dinny Nolan's birth date has been put back as far as 1922 as the artist says he survived the Coniston massacre of 1928. Dinny is a Warlpiri tribesman and an important 'waterman'. He is responsible for many water dreamings and leads mens water corroborees, a very important role in the desert Aboriginal's society.
Dinny worked as a stockman across much of the Territory before settling at Papunya in the early 1970's, and was among the first of Aboriginal men to paint on canvas under the influence of Geoff Bardon, who entered the community at the same time.
In 1991 Dinny travelled to the United States with Paddy Carroll Tjungurryayi on a working exhibition across the country. Dinny is married to Alice Napangardi, they have two daughters, a son and several grandchildren.
More of Dinny Nolan Tjampitjinpa's paintings are available from our Fine Art Gallery.
